Our Story

Carolina Historical Consulting, LLC, was founded in 2014 by Dr. Eric Plaag, who had been working in South Carolina for the preceding twelve years as an independent, sole proprietor historical consultant. As Eric's consulting business grew and projects became more complex, it became necessary to build partnerships with other independent historians and historical technicians who could collaborate with Eric on providing the highest quality of service and skills to his clients. The creation of Carolina Historical Consulting, LLC, streamlines this process and improves efficiency, while maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and meticulousness for which Eric has been known for the entirety of his career.

While Eric sometimes partners with others to provide top-notch service to his clients, ALL projects completed by Carolina Historical Consulting, LLC, are directly supervised by Eric as the principal consultant.

Our Team

Eric Plaag, PhD

Eric Plaag was born and raised in Virginia, where he completed his BA in Religion and Philosophy at the College of William and Mary and an MFA in Fiction Writing at George Mason University. After living for nine years in various New England towns, he moved to South Carolina in 2002 and completed his PhD in American History at the University of South Carolina in 2006. Since then, he has made his living as an historian, writer, and photographer. Eric relocated permanently to Boone, NC, in September 2011. It soothes his soul to be at home in the mountains of Appalachia, where he has always felt most at peace.

Eric has worn many hats in his lifetime, and he is an ardent believer in trying on new ones every so often. Aside from his professional interests, he is an unrepentant traveler, a rambling storyteller, an audacious karaoke fiend, a devoted cinephile, a faithful member of the Church of Baseball, and father to a fiercely independent oracle. He shares his Boone, NC, home with his wife Teresa and their adopted, elderly cat, Burma.
